Chaithanya Neuro Clinic – Ayurvedic Management of Neurological Disorders

Despite remarkable advances in diagnostic tools, modern medicine still struggles to effectively restore function in neurological disorders, particularly due to the non-regenerative nature of central nervous tissues. In contrast, Ayurveda attributes these conditions primarily to the imbalance of Vata dosha, offering holistic solutions aimed at restoring balance and promoting regeneration. At Chaithanya Neuro Clinic, we focus on treating various neurological disorders such as stroke, facial palsy, motor neuron disease (MND), multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, sciatica, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and paraplegia.

Paralysis, particularly hemiplegia due to cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), is one of the most common conditions we treat. Ayurveda correlates this with “Pakshaghata,” a condition caused by aggravated Vata that dries up the body channels and nerves, leading to loss of function and sensation on one side of the body. This may be caused by cerebral hemorrhage, thrombosis, embolism, tumors, encephalitis, or hypertension. Risk factors include age, sex, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol. Clinical features often include unilateral loss of movement, spasticity, postural deformities, and facial asymmetry.

Our integrative diagnostic approach includes haemogram, lipid profile, MRI/CT scan, Doppler studies, CSF examination, spinal X-rays, and ECG. Ayurvedic management encompasses prevention, internal medicines, Panchakarma therapies, dietary adjustments, yoga, and counseling. Preventive measures include adopting a Vata-pacifying diet rich in medicinal foods like black gram, garlic, ginger, and pomegranate, along with lifestyle changes to manage hypertension and cholesterol. Medically, we emphasize “Nidana Parivarjana” (avoiding causative factors) and utilize therapies like Snehana (oleation), Svedana (fomentation), Virechana (purgation), Vasti (medicated enemas), and Nasya (nasal therapy). Shirovasti, Shirodhara, and other rejuvenating therapies help restore neuromuscular balance.

Ayurveda’s approach also incorporates yoga and pranayama under expert supervision to correct postural imbalances and enhance relaxation. Patients are counseled to actively use affected limbs, maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and manage stress, weight, and blood pressure to prevent recurrence and ensure long-term improvement.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that leads to the progressive demyelination of neurons in the central nervous system. Typically presenting between the ages of 20 and 40, MS is more common in women and is believed to be linked to immunogenetic and viral factors, particularly the Epstein-Barr virus. Risk factors include autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), stress, physical trauma, and even pregnancy-related stress.

The pathophysiology of MS involves the activation of T and B cells, leading to inflammation and the destruction of oligodendrocytes, which form the myelin sheath. This results in plaque formation and incomplete remyelination. MS manifests in four distinct patterns: relapsing-remitting, primary progressive, secondary progressive, and progressive-relapsing. Common symptoms include patchy vision loss, vertigo, neuropathic pain, fatigue, depression, and transient sensory disturbances such as Lhermitte’s sign.

Diagnosis is clinical, supported by tools such as nerve conduction studies (NCS), CSF analysis for IgG levels, and MRI scans to identify demyelinating plaques. While modern medicine offers corticosteroids, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and even surgical interventions like deep brain stimulation or drug pumps, these treatments primarily manage symptoms without offering a cure.

Ayurveda identifies MS as a condition of “Prana Aavrutha Vyana” accompanied by Vata-Pitta aggravation, Kapha and Majja (marrow) depletion. At Chaithanya, we focus on balancing Vata, rejuvenating the nervous system, and improving overall vitality through internal herbal medicines and Panchakarma therapies. Procedures like Abhyanga (therapeutic oil massage), Bashpa Sweda (steam therapy), Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda (rice bolus massage), and Basti Karma (medicated enemas) are highly beneficial in improving motor function and reducing fatigue.

Our holistic treatment aims to reduce plaque size, slow down degeneration, and enhance quality of life. Lifestyle modifications, balanced nutrition, and personalized therapies help manage symptoms effectively and reduce the dependency on long-term medication, providing patients with a renewed sense of wellness and independence.
